"Each of the stories pull you in and challenge you to hang on for the ride! From the visceral reaction to “Ghoul” to the “Rocket Man”-like emptiness and hope in “Ten Years Gone”. The intricate and spiritual twists of “The Mayor of Seventeenth Avenue” and the guilt-ridden escape of “Continental Highway”, Tommie Lee’s storytelling does not disappoint! As each of the stories’ end became apparent, I found myself wishing for more, only to find each ending perfect. I cannot recommend “For Four Players” highly enough!"

"Four very excellent stories. Each is very different from the others and really draws you into the scene so that you feel as if you are actually there as an eyewitness. These were subjects that I normally would not choose to read, but right away from the beginning I was pulled in and wanted to keep reading to find out what would happen next."

Review of For Four Players at Smashwords by Amber Topp

Just had an impromptu discussion of my short-story collection...

tommielee:

Just had a VERY nice chat with a coworker who bought For Four Players who gave me her review of the first two stories. Not her usual subject matter…but they sucked her in anyway and made her keep reading.

She actually seemed very happily disturbed by the stories she’s read so far. Heh. Which was, of course, the idea.

There are four stories in For Four Players. The first is about finding a balance between who you are, what you are, and what you are expected to be. The second is about the best laid plans of man and machine, and the love between a father and his son. The third, the classic struggle between good and evil in an unlikely setting. The finale is a quick story about running away from what you fear the most.

  • Maureen: Tomorrow afternoon is the "book read" in my class! Will let you know the kids' comments
  • Me: Oh God. Which one are you reading? (winces)
  • Maureen: I am thinking "Continental Highway", as that is the first one I read...and I thank you for that. I will let them decide the next one based on the titles. Bet they choose "Ghoul"!
  • Me: Never too soon to teach Cannibalism.

"What I would not give for you to experience this. I would give anything to be able to share this tranquil peace with you. This silence, this absolute perfect stillness."

(Ten Years Gone)

"The figure in black who just got off bus 8117 is going to change the lives of everyone who encounters him in the next 48 hours."

regarding Mulligan

In October 2010, I published my first book, a novel called Mulligan.

I did some research.

And I found out things are hard for the small-press publishers these days: many are closing, others are losing their paper providers, etc. Almost no one accepts unsolicited novels right now…unless I wanted to change the story and make it about Born-Again Tea Party Christian Detectives, Lesbian Firefighters, or Canadians. And become one of those, myself (lesbian firefighter might not be so bad, although I DO like hockey).

Because of this, I had to go the very cheap self-publishing route, and put it out as an eBook first. Hopefully I’ll sell enough of them to be able to do a print version later. Mostly because I want one, too. But eBooks are becoming a big chunk of the market, and the chance presented itself to do this now.

So I present you with four virtual manila envelopes to choose from:

  1. Learn more about Mulligan by visiting http://mulligan-novel.tumblr.com . Links along the top will give you a little insight on the story and the characters, as well as a link for ordering the book.
  2. Throw caution to the wind and buy the eBook right now, by stampeding to this link. You’ll have download options, including Kindle, Sony, Nook, Stanza, Palm, Droid (soon if not yet), and iPad (a friend in Australia says it looks awesome on his iPad). There’s also versions you can read on your computer if you don’t have an eBook device of some kind. The same is true of For Four Players.
  3. If you shop at the Barnes & Noble NOOKbook store, and would rather buy it there for your Nook…Clickity.
  4. Say to yourself either “I hate reading on the computer” or “Tommie wrote it…how good could it really be?”, and click the “X” in the upper right corner of this window. No harm, no foul.

I hope you enjoy the story. Just by buying it, you accomplish something a 15 year-old guitar player didn’t think would ever happen.

And if you want to talk about either book, you can always reach me at tealsea@gmail.com.

Thanks for giving me some time, and for considering giving me quite a bit more.

- Tommie
